Natalie Portman’s acting career started out as the young girl (aged 12) that the hitman looks after in Leon (The Professional). Her career really started to fly when she won the role of Padmé Amidala in the new Star Wars films. She played an action role in V for Vendetta.
Now for her new film, The Black Swan, she had to undergo a weight loss program which involved extreme fitness training exercise program to fit into the role of a ballerina. But embodying the role of a ballerina in the new psychological thriller Black Swan wasn’t easy for Natalie Portman.
A year before shooting, she had to undergo a weight loss plan and fitness training exercise program which involved extreme ballet, cross-fitness training, and swimming. In the end, the petite, 5’3″ actress, 29, had a weight loss of about 20 lbs.
“I think it was just the physicality of it all (the weight loss plan and fitness training exercise program) that was the most extreme,” she told UsMagazine.com at IFP’s 20th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards in NYC. “I mean, I had never gotten that much fitness training exercise just to lose weight – to be doing five-to-eight hours a day of [the fitness exercise program] was really a challenge.”

Despite the physical demands of the role, Portman, a vegan, said she was happy to throw herself into the part, for which she is already generating Oscar buzz.
“I think the most important thing is coming to work as prepared as you can be every day and working as hard as you can every day,” she told Us. “If you do that, you can always ensure that you have an amazing experience.”
Would she ever undergo similar weight loss and fitness training exercise for a film role again?
“I think I would do this kind of fitness training exercise and weight loss again because it’s just so rewarding,” she told Us. “It’s always one of those things where, when you put in a lot, you get out a lot.”
She said she’ll even incorporate some of the skills she learned into her day-to-day life.
“Not ballet,” she told Us, “but I’ll always dance!”
Portman confessed that the most difficult part was the strict weight loss diet plan she was following during the filming of the movie. Darren Aronofsky, the director of the film, admitted that Portman had actually screamed at the manager telling him she can no longer make it with only almonds and carrots in her weight loss diet plan.
