Looking at Jennifer Lawrence, the last thing we thing of is fat, and yet many in Hollywood would consider her fat. Well, is Jennifer Lawrence fat? In 2011, Lawrence told FLARE magazine, “I’d rather look a little chubby on camera and look like a person in real life, than look great onscreen and look like a scarecrow in real life.”
As a matter of fact she has been very outspoken about “Body shaming”. In a recent interview at Comic-Con, Jennifer Lawrence said:
“I had a conversation with somebody about the struggles with weight in the industry – I know that’s something I talk nonstop about, and they were saying, ‘All of the main movie stars aren’t very underweight.’ I said, ‘Yeah, because once you get to a certain place [in your career], people will hire you. They just want you to be in the movie, so they don’t care.’ It’s more about the struggle for the actors and actresses who haven’t made it to a certain place.”
Clearly she has felt the pressure to look slimmer and refused to obey. At 24, 5’7 1/2 and at about 130 pounds, she is certainly not fat but for Hollywood she may be. Nevertheless, at this point given how successful she is, she is making 20 million for her recent movie, she doesn’t really care. She has mentioned many times that she does not diet, how refreshing, but she does exercise. When she was preparing for the role as Katniss Everdeen, she told Elle that she wanted to “look fit and strong — not thin and underfed”. She continued by saying “I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner,'”.
Would you also believe that in 2011, Jennifer Lawrence told FLARE magazine, “I’d rather look a little chubby on camera and look like a person in real life, than look great onscreen and look like a scarecrow in real life.” You don’t hear that very often from Hollywood mega stars.
So how does she keep her body looking this good, if she does not diet?
Jennifer Lawrence exercise
A major movie star has to work with a major movie star trainer to prepare for a role where she has many fighting scenes and she clearly has to look strong. The men the called for the job was Dr. Joe Horrigan, a chiropractic sports medicine doctor who trains Hollywood’s stars. His specialty is to work with stars that will be starting in films that require the stars to be in fighting shape. He makes sure they get in that shape without any injuries. That is a very important aspect of the whole equation. What good is a movie star trainer if the movie star gets injured and there are delays.
So how did Dr. Joe Horrigan train Jennifer?
He felt the best way for Jennifer to get in this amazing shape was for her to do a combination of sprints, stationary bike rides, archery lessons, and rock and tree climbing with the stunt crew. The key is that you need to get your blood pumping. So to do that we start we cardio. Cardio improves your stamina, endurance, and overall health. According to Dr. Horrigan, “running, cycling (road, mountain, classes, or simply a regular stationary bike), or various aerobic classes such as dance classes and hiking” will all do the trick. Guess what Jennifer’s favorite was? No you did not guess skipping and yes, anything that pumps your blood counts, even skipping. You don’t even need to do it that long. 20 minutes a day is enough to get you in great shape.
Additionally, Jen needed to get strong. That is where strength training or resistance training comes in. Strength training builds muscle, and the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even when you do not exercise. Now we are not talking bodybuilding type of muscle, we are talking highlighting our arms, legs and the rest of our bodies with some definition. You will look great, feel strong and lose weight. Nirvana!
But if you want to be in this amazing shape, you also have to be flexible. Flexibility for Jennifer Lawrence meant doing yoga during her off days from “exercising”. This was the way for her body to recover from the very strenuous exercises she did most other days. Her yoga routine included sun salutes, reverse warriors, chair poses, planks, and tree poses.
Finally, the key to all working in harmony is consistency. You need to be able to consistently exercise to get the results Jennifer got. The fact we can mix things up and never get bored, makes it a lot easier.
So you probably wonder if Jennifer enjoyed all this or she had a pretty mediocre attitude. Dr. Horrigan says. “She was never late. She never missed a workout. She never complained. She did everything that was asked of her and she usually did so with a smile.” That’s a real professional in my book.
All this seems to point to the fact that Jennifer has changed. In fall 2013, she told InStyle that she ate “ungodly amounts” of food while filming the original The Hunger Games. “I used to tell myself, ‘Stop eating, people are going to see this. This movie is going to be around forever.’ But nope! I was like, I still want candy and I still want a hot dog!” Would you believe that she also said that “nothing” could motivate her to work out at that time. How times change.
