The Alkaline Diet
The Alkaline diet centers around the Ph of the human body. Disease prevention, increasing energy, and weight loss are a few of the main benefits. Normal human PH range is 7.36 to 7.44. Most people consume large amounts of highly processed foods that acidify the bodies PH balance. This causes the body to become too acidic, resulting in health problems ranging from weight gain, skin irritations, chronic fatigue, arthritis, ulcers, and chronic, degenerative diseases. The diet consists of 80% raw vegetables, nuts, and some fruits. Then 20% of acidic foods to bring the bodies Ph back into range for optimal health.
The Atkins Diet
The Atkins Diet is designed to switch your body into a state of ketosis by which your body uses fat as fuel causing rapid weight loss. The first stage of the diet consists of a two-week period called the induction phase. During this induction phase only fats, meats, and certain cheeses are allowed, keeping your carbohydrate intake extremely low, almost to none. This puts your body into ketosis. After the two week induction phase you slowly add allowed carbohydrates back into the diet while keeping all sweets, and products containing white flour to an absolute minimum.
Balanced Diet
People who eat a balanced diet usually consume foods from the following three categories; protein, carbohydrates, and fat at every meal, properly balanced. A balanced diet typically ensures that the proper portions of every food group are eaten, and no junk foods are eaten in excess.
Blood Type Diet
The blood type diet became popular from the book Eat Right 4 Your Type by Peter D’Adamo. The theory of the diet is that lectins in foods react differently with each ABO blood type.
- Blood group O is believed to be the hunter, the earliest human blood group. The diet recommends that people with this blood type eat a meat-rich diet along the lines of the Paleolithic diet.
- Blood group A is called the cultivator. Believed it to be a more recently evolved blood type, dating back from the dawn of agriculture. The diet recommends that individuals with this blood type eat a diet emphasizing vegetables and vegetarian foods, eliminating red meat.
- Blood group B is referred the nomad type. Typically associated with a strong immune system and efficient digestive system. People with this blood type are said be the only ones who can thrive on dairy products.
- Blood group AB are slated the enigma group. This is the most recently evolved type. The enigma group can eat a diet in between blood types A and B

Diabetic Diet
Diabetics cannot make or properly use insulin. This leads to high blood glucose, or sugar, levels in your blood. A healthy diet will help to reduce your blood sugar. Controlling your blood sugar is critical to prevent the complications of diabetes. Diabetes experts recommend meal plans that are flexible, and healthy. The individual’s lifestyle needs to be taken into account. Consulting with a registered dietitian can be extremely helpful.
Healthy diabetic eating includes:
- Eating often
- Eating less fat
- Limiting sweets
- Being careful about how many carbohydrates you eat, and when you eat them.
- Eating lots of whole-grain foods, fruits and vegetables
- Limiting your use of alcohol

The 5-factor Diet
The 5 Factor is a diet and fitness program that skips carbohydrate counting, food measuring and time-consuming exercise routines. The plan is made up of five, 25-minute workouts per week (all of which can be done using only a set of dumbbells and a bench) and eating five healthy meals per day.
Harley Pasternak the creator of the 5 Factor also has an online option where dieters can use interactive and customized tools to create their individual program.
- 5-week plan - This plan is designed to give you results in five weeks.
- 5 meals a day - By eating five 5-Factor meals every day, you will start losing weight and feel less hungry throughout the day.
- 5-ingredient meals - Online members get hundreds of recipes that use only five ingredients and take only five minutes to prepare.
- 25-minute workouts - Harley believes that working out more often for shorter periods of time is more effective than spending hours at the gym.
- 5 cheat days in 5 weeks - Dieters are allowed one day a week. Harley believes that controlled cheating can actually help you reach your goals.
Food Combining Diet
Food combining is based on the theory that different food groups require different digestion times. Foods, which have a similar digestion time, are to be eaten together.
Different foods also require different digestive enzymes to assist in the digestive process - some acid, some alkaline. When acids and alkalines come in contact, they neutralize each other and this impedes digestion.
Protein-rich foods require a very acidic environment for digestion. Carbohydrates including; starches, fruits, sugars, as well as fats require a more alkaline medium. The digestive process is compromised when two or more foods are eaten at the same time, that require opposite conditions for digestion.
When starches and proteins are combined it often leads to indigestion, abdominal discomfort, bloating, gas, and poor absorption of nutrients. Quick digesting foods such as; fruit must wait to be digested until the slowest digesting foods leave the stomach this process can take up to 6 or 8 hours. As the fruit and starches wait to be digested the foods star to decompose and fermentation, producing gas, acid and even alcohol along with indigestion.
Food combining principles:
- Don’t mix starchy foods with protein foods at the same meal.
- Eat carbohydrate foods and protein foods at separate meals. Protein foods require an acid medium for digestion.
- Eat starches and acids at separate meals. Acids neutralize the alkaline medium required for starch digestion and the result is indigestion and fermentation.
- Eat only one kind of protein food at a meal.
- Eat proteins and acid foods at separate meals. The acids of acid foods inhibit the secretion of the digestive acids required for protein digestion.
- Eat proteins and fats at separate meals. Some foods, especially nuts, are over 50% fat and require hours for digestion.
- Eat proteins, sugars, and fruit at separate meals.
- Eat starchy foods, sugars, and fruit at separate meals.
- Eat melons alone. Melons combine well with almost no other food.
- Don’t eat dessert after a meal.
- Chew all food close to liquid consistency.

Low Carbohydrate Diet
The low carbohydrate diet is similar to the Atkins diet, although a strict two-week induction period is not always followed. The diet consists of meats, cheeses, fats, and some leafy green vegetables keeping all carbohydrates to a minimum, and avoiding sugar, white flour, and starchy vegetables. Low carb followers claim to eat as much as they want of the allowed foods and still lose weight, or maintain their ideal weight. Many low carb dieters see it as a lifestyle.
Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Stacey Keibler, and LL Cool J are just a few of the celebrities who swear by the Low Carbohydrate way of eating.
Low Calorie Diet
A low calorie diet is simply that. A diet that consist of a daily caloric intake which is at the minimum of an individuals caloric range based on height, weight, and age. Fat intake is usually limited as well since fat calories add up quickly. Most dieters keep a daily log of their calories to ensure they stay under their caloric limit. Many people adhere to a low calorie diet for life, and maintain a healthy weight. It is important for a dieter following this plan to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, to ensure adequate nutrition.
Low Fat Diet
Dieters following a low fat diet will either keep track of their daily fat gram total, or follow a plan where all the foods they consume are very low in fat. Some evidence suggests that a moderate fat restriction, where fat accounts for 20 to 30 percent of total calories is more effective than a very low-fat intake, where 20 percent of calories are from fat. Research shows that individuals who follow a diet where 20 to 30 percent of calories come from fat are more likely to keep the weight off long term. Healthy fats (unsaturated fats) are essential for overall health and should not be restricted to a percentage less than 20%.
Macrobiotic Diet
The macrobiotic approach to eating is based on choosing foods that are less processed and more natural, and employing more traditional methods of cooking. Dietary recommendations include whole grains such as brown rice and grain products such as pasta, a variety of cooked and raw vegetables, beans and bean products such as tofu, sea vegetables, mild natural seasoning, fish, fruit, nuts, seeds, and mild beverages. Certain types of vegetables, such as tomatoes and eggplant, are avoided temporarily or used sparingly. Food should be organically grown and eaten fresh. The Macrobiotic lifestyle also provides guidelines as to how food should be prepared. Using a microwave to cook food is prohibited, and rice must be cooked in a pressure cooker. Food should be eaten and chewed slowly, in a relaxed manner.
Master Cleanse Detox
The “Master Cleanse Diet” aka the “Lemonade Diet” was developed by Stanley Burroughs in 1941 and made popular by Peter Glickman through his book Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier in 10 Days, which promotes Burroughs’ regimen to a modern audience. The fast consists of drinking a concoction of freshly squeezed lemon juice, grade b maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and filtered water that is free of fluoride. For a minimum of 10 days, you drink only the lemonade mixture. Different recipes are floating around in various books and all over the internet. For the exact amounts please refer to the program outlined in the book you are following. Please consult your doctor before doing this cleanse, and note that many experts agree that when you lose weight this quickly the cause of the weight loss is most probably water, and muscle wasting.
Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean Diet is a way of eating inspired by the traditional dietary patterns of the countries around the Mediterranean basin, particularly Greece and Southern Italy.
The diet consists of:
- Generous amounts of fruits and vegetables
- Healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil
- Eating small portions of nuts
- Drinking red wine, in moderation
- Consuming very little red meat
- Eating fish on a regular basis
- Grains
- Olives
- Breads
Mini Meals Diet
Dieters who eat a diet of mini meals usually consume five small meals eaten throughout the day every few hours. The meals typically consist of lean proteins, vegetables, and fruit. This keeps your blood sugar balanced, and your energy up. Many dieters also find that eating so frequently reduces the urge to eat foods that are unhealthy. Eating mini meals also revs up your metabolism.
No Junk Food Diet
The No Junk Food diet is pretty self-explanatory. “Junk food” is a slang phrase used to describe foods with little to no nutritional value. Dieters stay away from refined foods, high sugar foods, foods with high trans, and saturated fats. These foods often will cause an individual to gain weight.
Portion Control Diet
Individuals that use portion control as the basis for their daily diet choices, eat whatever they chose but only in small amounts. The bonus is obviously that you don’t feel like you are depriving yourself of anything. On the down side, the dieter must make sure they are getting proper nutrition, and not just eating junk food all day. Most people who follow portion control principles will eat a pretty healthy diet, most of the time, but then they will have a high fat food, or high calorie whenever they want, but just a smaller portion than served.
Raw Food Diet
The raw diet, is based on consuming unprocessed, preferably organic, whole plant-based foods, at least 75 per cent of which should be uncooked.
Permitted Foods Include:
- fresh fruits (dehydrated fruits are acceptable)
- vegetables
- nuts
- seeds
- beans
- grains
- legumes
- dried fruits
- seaweeds
- freshly made fruit and vegetable juices
- Other organic or natural foods which have not been processed or cooked.
- Milk from a young coconut
Raw foods contain more essential food enzymes than cooked foods. Foods cooked above 116°F lose most of their enzymes. Raw food followers use specific techniques to prepare foods. These include sprouting seeds, grains and beans; soaking nuts and dried fruits; and juicing fruits and vegetables. Cooking can only be done through a dehydrator which, blows hot air through the food but never reaches a temperature higher than 116F.
South Beach Diet
The South Beach Diet was founded by Arthur Agatston, MD and is covered in depth in his book titled The South Beach Diet. The diet is based on the Glycemic Index, which ranks foods based on their glycemic load. The goal is to find a healthy balance between carbohydrates and fat and good carbohydrates and fats. Highly processed foods, sweets, and soft drinks are prohibited. The diet is divided into three different phases all of which include specific allowable foods, meal plans, and recipes.
Vegan Diet
The vegan diet consists of all foods except any food derived from an animal. This excludes all meat, dairy, cheeses, eggs, gelatin, and other ingredients derived from animals. Study after study has concluded several health benefits of a vegan diet. Virtually no cholesterol is consumed while following a vegan lifestyle, and excess weight comes off very quickly. Vegans typically consume high amounts of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains. Morality is usually a main motivating factor in this diet, and is considered by some a lifestyle, and even a religious belief.
Vegetarian Diet
The vegetarian diet prohibits meat. Cheeses, and dairy are still allowed. Moral issues play a role in this diet as well as many health benefits stemming from eliminating meat from one’s diet. Weight loss is usually pretty steady, but if cheeses and dairy products are still consumed in high quantities it may be hard to burn off the extra calories, and from a health perspective, lower cholesterol, and prevent arteries from becoming clogged.
Weight Watchers Diet
The weight watchers program is a diet based on calorie, and fat restriction. Meetings are also held in a supportive, and motivational setting to keep you on track. There are two main plans you can chose to follow, the Flex Plan, and the Core Plan. All foods are assigned a certain point value to determine how much of a certain food the dieter can eat.The Flex Plan allows the dieter to eat foods from a wide variety as long as the total points remain at the allotted daily maximum. The daily maximum point value is based on the dieter’s age, and height.
The Core Plan allows the dieter to be free from counting the point values of all the foods they eat.The allowed foods on the Core Plan are:
- Vegetables and fruits
- Soups (non-creamy)
- Whole Wheat Pasta, Brown Rice, Potatoes and Grains
- High Fiber and other cereals without added sugar
- Lean Meats, poultry, fish and eggs
- Fat-Free Milk Products
- Healthy Oils
- Condiments
The Zone Diet
The objective with the Zone Diet is to maintain a hormonal balance by eating specifically prepared meals. The food plan consists of a balanced ratio of carbohydrates (40%), fat (30%) and proteins (30%). Barry Sears author of the book The Zone believes that you should eat only foods, which control your body’s insulin production. Each meal or snack is designed to follow a 40% (carbohydrates) 30% (mono-unsaturated fat) 30% (protein) ratio so that the body can give optimal performance. Dieters are advised to keep their calorie consumption for meals to a maximum of 500 calories, and snacks to 100 calories. The Diet consists of foods such as fresh vegetables, leafy green vegetables, fruits, nuts, sufficient protein consumption, and eight glasses of water. On this diet dieters are to avoid processed foods and meals that contain too much salt.
